Found at the Salvo's this week was this pot from P.N.G. : Papua New Guinea. It is signed Jimmy K. and so began the process of working out his identity. I have to admit it has so far defeated me. I need input from others.
What I know is that it is bound to be a tourist piece made during the heyday of tourism in P.N.G. in the early 90's prior to the troubles that have made travel in and out this part of the Eastern Highlands of P.N.G. difficult. The trade centred around Goroka and Kainantu. I have seen pieces similar to this which come from the Kainantu Pottery which was established by an Australian Muriel Larner in the 1970's. Several of the graduate students from the Goroka School of Art & Design went to nearby Kainantu and worked there creating wares that were sold locally and in tourist areas all around P.N.G..
But who is Jimmy K ???
That's quite wonderful. Sounds like you have already researched a lot!
I wonder if a curator at Queensland Art Gallery could help? They are currently running an exhibition on PNG art 1966-2016.
Love it.....I Can really see a face in the pic # 2.
~ Wonder IF it was a Self-portrait ?? LOL ...as I am Just kidding !!
Here is something else by him dated 1992:

In Port Moresby is/was shop Annie's pottery owned by Annie Debrouwere. On facebook there is a photo where she is holding a vase in her hand made by her longtime potter Jimmy. The decoration on the vase look simulair as on your vase.
Google on the names mention her and you will find the photo.
Her email address is annies.pottery.png10
@ gmail . Com. Maybe it still works
Many thanks MP.KUNST ... I will give it a go.
I have just sent off an email I hope the address is still functioning. Thanks again MPKUNST.
I hope that this way you can find out who the maker of your vase is. Let us know when you get an answer back.
Many thanks BLAMMOAMMO !!!!
Have checked this morning and no reply as yet MP.KUNST.
MP KUNST the address may be too old .... the email bounced on me, unfortunately.
Hey, what a pity.
I am moderately convinced that this Jimmy is the potter you are looking for. But I understand that you want proof before you are convinced.
On the other hand, it is nice that there are still people with a business who cannot be reached digitally. No website, no multimedia, not even an email address. It is therefore still possible to run a business for decades without using our digital highway.
I think that's funny and I feel a little pathetic myself.
I'm one of those who use this highway from the moment I get up until the moment I go to bed. Pretty sad I think now. LOL
