(928 items)
Following a recent post by welzebub regarding the identification of a frit decor by Welz, here is a large vase that features the same decor.
It is 22.5 cm tall & 16 cm across the rim - which looks like the snowflake style rim seen on other Welz products.
It is a bright opaque yellow, with the frit or overshot surface having an iridescent effect. There are three applied feet.
A flea market find. I'd seen this around for a few months & couldn't quite make up my mind to get it or not...I thought it was extremely unusual & interesting, but I've been trying not to get really large items, as I'm running out of space (sure we all understand this issue!).
Anyway, I decided to go for it after seeing welzebub's post on this decor.
I love this piece!! It is one I certainly would not have been able to resist had I seen it. It is a highly unusual piece of glass. Although it certainly has the aesthetic of some Welz production, I am not so sure that I can say I think it is theirs, at least at this point. I do have to say that the ground color appears the same as a ground they they used frequently. Does it glow orange under a UV light?
The surface color used appears similar to my piece. The crackle surface on this example is a technique I am sure was used by Welz, as most companies did use it, but it is one I have not yet identified on a piece of their known production at this point. I am confident that at some point I will, but I think I am always much more cautious about claiming attributions than most people realize.
Although the rim crimp is similar to the snowflake rim, the snowflake has a specific pattern to it not seen on this example. It also has variations in the application of the surface color, giving an appearance of "wear", which is the same as my small frit example. Being infused glass, it can not be wear, but kind of gives that "look".
Although, like I said above, I can not state that I think it is Welz production, I can say that I would strongly suspect it to be theirs, as many things about it speak to their aesthetic. Regardless of the maker, it is a great piece of glass.
I would add that the kind of purple pink iridescence showing in some areas is also the same as some surface color seen on my small frit example I posted.
Thanks for posting this fabulous piece!!
Wow - what a gorgeous piece! I love it! I know what you mean about large pieces, but I'd have gone for this one, too! You don't see yellow very much at all, either. Very special and unusual! :)
BEAUTIFUL glass!

What a stunning piece the colour texture magic thanks for sharing IronLace
Hi czechglass5, yes, this does have iridescence on the feet as well, not all over but mostly on the bumpier areas. The feet have a stylised leaf shape but somewhat different to other leaf feet (there's a lot of pieces with applied feet in my collection, but none quite like this shape).
Also very interested to see your piece of this glass!
Hi welzebub,
So glad that you, & others are enjoying this vase! It did attract my attention right away, I had to go straight over & pick it up, inspect it...just the size & price put me off a bit. Otherwise I would have bought it months ago...glad I waited as now I understand it better.
Luckily the stallholder also gave me a good discount, as she was sick of wrapping & unwrapping it every week - she was also worried it would get broken in transit sometime. Now I have to fit it in somewhere, too big for any of my cabinets so I guess it will have to sit on top of one of them!
I just tested it with the blacklight & it did glow orange, which is something I haven't noticed with my other glass. The frit texture is a little uneven here & there, which does give a slightly "distressed" look, but fits in nicely with the aesthetic of similarly random decors like Peloton, spatter, etc.
Hi Michelle, thanks so much for your comments, glad you're enjoying it! I do like glass that's a bit different & I love pieces with texture, so it fits the bill perfectly. The opaque yellow is also unusual - I do have various yellow items but most of them are cased, usually white inside & clear outside, with the yellow in between. Yellow makes much more of a statement when it's opaque.
Many thanks also Scott & MALKEY for your postive comments!
Many thanks, czechglass5!
I adore the colour and shape of your vase, just lovely...:-)
