Hey Lmansfield, I have one identical to this, with the exception of the top center hardware piece, mine has the double M hardware, other than that its the same, trunkman has just bought one with alligator tin that is very close also. So to say its rare, no I don't think so, but to find a Martin Maier in this condition is always a good find, love it, what does the in side look like. greendog

Actually the six or so Martin Maier trunks I have seen with tin pattern, five of them have been the alligator pattern, one was wheat pattern, and that is also owned by trunkman. the rest have been oak slat or bare wood with covering removed

I would say harder to find than most trunks Larry,The exterior seems solid and in good shape. I love this style of M&M hardware. The interior needs some work to make it complete though. There are very few currently on the market at this time.

      Thanks for the post.

Hey Drill, are you saying that the MM with alligator tin is harder to find or just MM in general is hard to find?
    5. Drill Drill, 8 years ago
I would say that Finding this style of hardware to me is a home run.Yes it is much harder to find. Many older Martin Maier trunks have some very average(run of the mill) slat clamps. This particular type of hardware is harder to find and indicative to when he was on the top of his game. The Alligator pattern was a popular pattern for multiple manufacturers. If this trunk had hardware that was not his signature clamps it could be anyones. For me there are only about 10 to twelve makers that are truly desirable. This is certainly one of them .There are very few manufacturers of trunks that you can say for sure who made it.Even without a label on this one, it's a no brainer,we know who made it.

I wonder why all of the recent posts have the photos sideways, or upside down? Is this due to the posters or is this a C.W. issue?
    9. greendog greendog, 8 years ago
Jim , I think its got to be a poster issue, not rotating the photo to the proper position before they download.

Drill: While looking for information on Martin Maier trunks I came across your comments about 10 -12 makers that are "truly desirable". Would you share your list? I've purchased roughly 100 trunks. Only a dozen had manufacturing labels. Most are common (but beautiful). But at this point in my collecting I need to be more discriminating. Perhaps other could add their favorite trunk makers......?
    12. greendog greendog, 4 years ago
Well I'm not Drill but I'll put my two cent's in, for me Martin Maier, Romadka Brothers, Haskell Brothers, MM Secor, F. Eggeman, some of George Burroughs, Jenny Lind trunks, not an LV fan but Louis Vuitton, that's just a few of mine, I'm sure Drill has other's.
    13. DavidP, 4 years ago
Thanks Greendog. I have a Jenny Lind, and I just posted about 2 MM trunks and I seemed to have lucked into them. I found out about them by seeing one of your trunks. I'll look for the others makers. Thanks again.

Sorry so late on the response David.
I agree with Greendog on all his choices, Every person is different. My problem is that I appreciate way to many makers .A couple things: I collect Trunk images, Trunk Maker label images, Trunk Makers directory Advertising and storefront factory images. 6000 images A to Z has shown me many makers .1600 patent images have given me a different perspective. I look not only for certain makers but certain models of patented trunks that tend to be more scarce.
I also have a thing for french trunks because less of them were made. I seek out french trunks in addition to L.Vuitton, Examples are Goyard ,Moynat, Au Touriste, Aux Etats Unis, Malle Edison and the elusive Bazar Du voyage.
European trunks Such as Moritz Madler and Brussels trunk maker J. Delvaux are also better models.

Many Makers on the American side are desirable and peak my interest :
All Carpet trunks, Valise, Wood Slat, Dresser and Bureau trunks
      Carpeles & Heiser/Hartmann,
C.A. Taylor trunks Josiah Cummings,(Raw Hide) H.C. Faber or C.J. Dunn ( Raw Hides) Leatheroids
      (Certain) Drucker patented trunks.
      W.W./ H.A. Winship
Crouch Fitzgerald (Hat trunks, Gilson patents/ Raw Hide, or Ristori models)
      J.C. Gillmore (Bijou trunk),
      Bean's (New Departure trunk)
      Palica F.J. wall trunks
      Champion wall trunks
      W.C. Farel patented trunk
      F.W. Gromm
      Schmit brothers
      Watkins and Wolf
      Endebrock
      P.C. Murphy
      Crego & Berdan
      Sage's Trunk depot
Older trunk makers from Boston ,Phila, NY.
      Nathan Neat
      A.R. Pritchard
      John Wheelock
      Mattson Thomas
      Zechariah Hicks
      Robert Burr
      Roulstone E.A.G.
      John Cattnach
Robert Dean (Montreal 6 banded Jenny Lind)
      Samuel Hunt
      John McGee
For me, there are many others. The hunt for the rare keeps the hobby alive, every now and then it bears fruit. I can't have or want them all . It's important to research pass on knowledge and share so that others to may enjoy.

Wow! Great list. I will keep my eyes open for these. I have a few of these makers. Working on a Palica "Common Sense" wall trunk now. Did not know about 6000 images or .1600.... You have given me many hours of fun browsing on my computer. Thank you. And thank you for passing on your knowledge to those of us who are relatively new to this wonderful hobby. My wife tolerates my keen interest but does not quite understand why we have a dozen trunks in our living room. ;)
    16. Drill Drill, 4 years ago
Unfortunately I can't always share those images in CW's response format.(Bookmarked website's can be copy and pasted here.)
Ha! Your wife and mine sound universally related in their response to the trunk fetish.
Here are all 5 of Mr. Palica's wall trunk patent images for the years:
1889,1890,1891,1897,1899 they took quite some time to locate, enjoy!
Incidentally, Hartmann Trunk company eventually ended up producing the Common Sense wall trunk using his wall trunk patents.

Surprised to find the different designs for his wall trunks. My 2 are the earliest patent. The unusual angled slats on top in front and back are what attracted me in the first place. I've never seen this distinctive design on any other trunk. Do you know if any other maker did this? Thanks for your efforts. They are appreciated.
    18. Drill Drill, 4 years ago
There were around 15 different wall trunk makers
over a 25 year span.If you counted dresser and Bureau trunks there are a 50 more patent owners.
Just a few names that come to mind
      F. Palica ,Eggeman, Duguid, Truesdale ,Lyford (Clinton wall Trunk) ,M.M. Secor champion wall trunk, Eno, F.J. Pavic, A. Breehl, Hackett.
      Below are a few examples.

Again I am surprised by the variety of designs. Makes me think of the 100's of unusual trunks sitting in attics all over America. More reason to keep looking...... Thanks for the education, Drill.
