Most of the Pabst shades you see in this style are made of a clear, dark-blue plastic. This one is an earlier one, I think, circa the 1960s(?) made of a white plastic once painted inside and outside in a royal, reflective cobalt blue.
I am still debating whether or not I will repaint it. Blue light is bad for your sleeping patterns, and I have for now set it over the lamp I use every night (albeit I need a different chimney as this floats atop the current chimney and wobbles like a percussion).
I have treated the interior with pure petroleum jelly, as that is a main ingredient in plastic-preserving compounds (for fragile vintage plastics). Of course, it is now slippery inside but should be safer now (prevents cracking). The outside was treated only with H2O2 (a main ingredient in a product used to bleach plastics back to white), although I added some jelly to the actual part that says Pabst (as those will not be painted if I decide to redo the exterior).
When I saw it in the thrift store, I thought to myself:
"Wow, that's hideous. Definitely coming home with me."
$1.50.
Never would have thought PBR would have put that out. Love it.
It was pretty interesting. Hideous, but I like it.
"Wow, that's hideous. Definitely coming home with me." :-))) I'm laughing so hard. Way to go! No one else has got one like that! I'm thinking the same thing very often.
Thank you, bijoucaillouvintage.
Yep, too funny!
The more hideous the better!
Really appreciate the vintage plastic preservation tip you included.
Nice find!
Just know it will leave the item very slippery, and at risk of holding onto dust.
