Well, I have waited, and waited (and waited) for a long time before choosing a centerpiece because I'll only ever be buying one- and this is it! Almost every other one I've ever seen was in the Art Nouveau style with (the usual) maidens and whiplash designs that are always beautiful. But when I spotted this rare and unusual Art DECO beauty I knew that my search had finally come to an end!
It measures 11.4 inches in both height and diameter, and is in "fine" (perfect) condition throughout. On the underside of the bottom are a full set of (three) marks for the French firm of Durousseau & Raynaud, and it dates from 1930. Aside from the beautiful design, I love the symmetry achieved by combining silver plated metal, carved wood, and the finely cut glass insert (has a starburst pattern on the bottom which can't be seen from these photos). The design on those three vertical metal "pillars" actually look to me like they could be deco-style wings! Durousseau et Raynaud were notable for designing all of the the sleek Art Deco silver for the French train company P.L.M. (Paris-Lyon-Marseille).
Thanks for looking!
I really admire it.... and the fact you waited to buy only this one ;-))
Thank you kyratango! There are SO many beautiful things out there that, unless your name is Warren Buffet or Bill Gates, you simply HAVE to be patient and choose selectively...; - )
