This is a lovely little silver purse made by Boots Purse Drug Company, most people who live in the U.K. will recognise the name. The date mark is for 1916 it's had its fair share of knocks but with a bit of TLC it's come up pretty grand. The leather inside is intact and it as the name G. Berry and the address, 4 Holly Bank, then He---ford Street, Sale. If anybody can fill in the blanks It would be much appreciated. It's lovely addition to my compact collection. I shall put a link below in the comments telling you some history of Boots.

    Many thanks for looking.

A great item! I shopped in Boots when I lived in the UK. The street name might be Hereford Street.

Hi Bonny, I have been looking at a map book, I've found Holly Bank, but not Hereford street. It would be wonderful if this little purse could tell a story.

Many thanks bijoucaillouvintage and Judy, thank you for passing and leaving you lovely comments, they are much appreciated.
Hi kyra, the links above are of Holly Bank and Hereford Rd, they are obviously not the same place. It's so sad when I see the construction of the 1960s redevelopment on Hereford St, I wonder what it would have looked like before the developers got there hands on it. Unfortunately this is what a lot of the town centre's look like in the U.K. all the same with no charm.

      Hi,
The sponsor`s mark stands for Boots PURE Drug Company, originally Nottingham, and by 1893 extended further south into East Anglia and the West Midlands. The purse was assayed in Birmingham. I think the date letter is capital ‘’F’’ meaning 1930. There would be an indentation on the horizontal line if lower case ‘’r’’ for 1916.The line is straight, though.
      Regards

      Hi IVAN,
The 4th photo I except looks like a capital F but if you look at the first photo it does look like a lower case r. I have doubled checked and it is definitely a lower case r for the year 1916. Thank you for taking the time to comment, I do appreciate it.
    15. IVAN49 IVAN49, 8 years ago
Yes, it`s lower case ``r`` clearly visible in the first picture. So, 1916 no doubt.

Hello from the uk. Also guessed it was Hereford St in Sale which is near Manchester. We still have a Boots in most town centres, they aren't all characterless honestly. Lovely little purse.

Hi Wandlessfairy, thanks for your comment, it would great to find the person G. Berry unfortunately at the moment I'm not on Ancestry or I would look through the 1911 census for who lived in Hereford St. I'm also from Lancashire so not far away from Manchester. I know their are many towns that haven't loss their charm, thank goodness :-))
