    Hi,
I've just acquired a great 37mm gouge of sweep about #3. It isn't marked as #3 and the brand is indistinct. I have taken some close up of the name stamping but still can't read it. I wonder if anyone knows what brand it is?

      Almost looks like John Smith.

When I first read the above response some weeks ago I thought TubeAmp was joking! The other day I looked at the punched text upside down and John Smith is a good fit! The problems is, I have never heard of John Smith as a brand; is it a brand?

I have seen backward stamps on coinsilver before.

I have found out that John Smith (died 1885) was a saw maker in Sheffield. He was part of the Wheatman & Smith company. They may have made gouges but their advertising material doesn't suggest that. Another problem is Smith is a common name.
      Other ideas would be appreciated.

I wasn't joking. The other word could be England. Need better photos to see.

TA please accept my apologies for doubting your sincerity. Your idea about the word England is also quite feasible in that the word would fit into the space. It may have been that when "England" (hypothetically) was stamped , the worker hit the punch twice resulting in impressions at both ends instead of a complete word.
Having said that I'll try and take a better photo.

Sometimes if you press Silly Putty into marks you can resolve the letters with a little more clarity, albeit in reverse of course.
