Good evening everyone,
It has been awhile since I have bought anything as garage sales/bazars here in Mexico are much different then in North America. I'm always looking around though and was happy when I found this used book etc. store the other day. It hasn't been open for very long so I decided to check it out. It took me less then 5 minutes to decide not to even go through the books. Beside some books on some shelves is where I spotted some old movie theater lobby cards. I asked the owner if he had more and he pointed to more piles farther over. As I was going through them all I was seeing were Mexican movies then to my surprise the above Tarzan the Ape Man lobby cards ( approx. 13"x17" they tend to be a little larger the the American cards ) appeared. This movie was Johnny Weismuller's first big screen movie and his first Tarzan movie. Well I continued digging through all the piles and found some other interesting classic American movies along with the Tarzan Lobby cards they are in Spanish but the colors and scenes were too interesting not to buy some.

Tarzan the Ape Man is a 1932 American action adventure film featuring Edgar Rice Burroughs' famous jungle hero Tarzan and starring Johnny Weissmuller, Neil Hamilton, C. Aubrey Smith and Maureen O'Sullivan. It was Weissmuller's first of 12 Tarzan films. The film is loosely based on Burroughs' novel Tarzan of the Apes from approximately two decades earlier, with the dialogue written by Ivor Novello. The film was directed by W. S. Van Dyke. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
PLOT:
James Parker (C. Aubrey Smith) and Harry Holt (Neil Hamilton) travel in Africa, on a quest for the legendary elephant burial grounds and their ivory. They are joined by Parker's daughter Jane (Maureen O'Sullivan). Holt is attracted to Jane, and tries somewhat ineffectively to protect her from the jungle's dangers. He notably fails to prevent her abduction by the jungle's guardian, the mysterious Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller) and his ape allies.
The experience is terrifying to Jane at first, but as their relationship develops, she finds herself happy: "Not a bit afraid, not a bit sorry." As she returns to her father, her feelings are brought to a test. She wants Tarzan to come with her to London, and to be part of her world. But Tarzan turns his back on her and returns to the jungle. Her father tells her that is where Tarzan belongs, she cries, "No dad, he belongs to me."...
I sailed a 37 footer up the Rio Dolce in Guatemala where they filmed the Weissmuller Tarzan movies. Still just as wild !
The scenery must have been so beautiful and untamed perfect for a Tarzan movie. Sounds like a great adventure you had blunderbuss2!!!
Totally unchanged including those bloody Howler monkeys that scream all nite. Native indians in loin clothes etc.. Of course that was in '84.

Your movie lobby cards are really awesome! I'd actually never seen or heard of movie lobby cards until I saw all of you awesome posts. I love 'em all!
I was working in West Australia bb2 in 1982 living in a small camp listening to what I thought were monkeys was later informed it was kucaburros ( King fisher family ) making all the annoying racket.
Some of the Mexican art is much more detailed then the North American lobby cards Phil brighter colors, more graphic..

Lobby cards seem to have gone un noticed by many collectors as coca cola and other big name products have dominated the market with their paper poster ads. I'm guessing maybe some of the same illustrators who did lobby cards also were commissioned by the big popular companies to do their art work.
People like to make theme rooms be it cowboy, Walt Disney, horror, etc. from the lobby cards.
Roddyq, those howlers made so much noise, they probably drove the kingfishers away. LMAO ! I've hated monkeys ever since.
Yes bb2 the aussies were used to all the racket. It bothered me listening to that ooo aaaaa noise all day. The nights were more quieter. Those howlers probably bothered you day and night.

Rick when I first came across them all I was seeing were Mexican movies to be expected though being in Mexico then Tarzan popped up, this changed everything there were some great little treasures mixed in it turned out to be an excellent day:)
