I had this item for many years before I found out that it is a masticator from around 1900. It was originally chromed and is 7 inches long overall. Each jaw has three ridged prongs which interlock tightly when closed. It would have been used by people with no teeth to grind up their cooked meat before eating it. I saw an example on TV and then found one online in an American dental museum. The other 2 examples had straight prongs rather than the curved ones on this one.
