Someone had visited Darlington, a large market town on the River Skerne in County Durham England, and bought this little puzzle jug.

Darlington obtained its Charter of Incorporation and a coat of arms in 1867. A prize of £5 was offered for the best design but the Council never registered the winning design with the Sergeant of Arms at the Heraldic College of Arms in London .... so it was unofficial.

Above the shield is a Miner’s Pick being held by a naked arm representing the Town’s connection with the coal industry. It is a ‘Hewer’ pick used in the 1860’s and copied from one in possession of Messers. Pease & Partners Ltd.

The shield shows "Locomotion", the first locomotive of the first passenger railway in the world: The Stockton and Darlington. The three bales of wool represent the local woollen industry and the Bull’s Head represents the town’s connection with agriculture. The Ketton Ox’s head was taken from a drawing of a well-bred shorthorn called 'Comet' which the Colling Brothers of Ketton Hall, near Darlington, bred as the Durham Ox.

The Motto attached was ‘Floreat Industria’ (Let Industry flourish).

On the reverse of the jug:

    "Try how to drink
    and not to spill
    And prove the utmost
    of thy skill."
