Vess Jones started the Orange Whistle Company in 1915 at 307 N. Main Street in St. Louis, Missouri. Around 1919 or 1920 the company was simply called The Whistle Company and relocated to 1418 Pine. In 1921 they relocated to a new larger facility at 2916 Locust. From 1926 to around 1933 the local name was The Whistle Company of St. Louis.
The name would change again to the Whistle-Vess Company and finally to Vess Bottling Co.
Pic 1., shows a 10 oz. bottle dated 1948 from The Whistle Co., St. Louis, Mo and a nice advertisement for Whistle.
Pic 2., shows a 12 oz. bottle dated 1956 from the Vess Dry Corp. of Ohio, Columbus Ohio. I normally only buy St. Louis marked bottles but cannot find a St. Louis marked version of this one.
Pic. 3., shows a 32 oz. circa mid 1950's Whistle with no city mentioned. Was probable on the paper label it had at one time. Two 6 1/2 oz. Whistle bottles St. Louis marked. I am guessing these two date to somewhere from 1916 to the mid 1920's.

Hi bottle-bud. you seem to know a lot about Whistle. If Charles Leiper Grigg introduced Whistle in 1920 wouldn't Sylvester Jones' company have been called the Vess Beverage Company before that? And what year did Charles leave Vess for the Warner Jenkinson Company?
The more I Google the more confusing the origin of Whistle gets.
      Best wishes, David Salzman

David, There are lots of different stories out there on the web for different soda companies. I see you are a bit confused. Here's what I know,

Charles Leiper Grigg founded the Howdy (Orange) Co in 1920 which would become The Seven Up Co in 1936. Charles never left 7Up. I read a newspaper article that stated Grigg was chairman of 7 Up until his death in 1940. He may have also worked for Warner Jenkens but I really don't know at this time.

Sylvester Vess Jones founded the (Orange) Whistle Co. in 1916 then later in the mid 1930's would become the Vess Beverage Co. Vess will change ownership several times over the years.
