Hi there - can anyone tell me about this desk and chair? Perhaps the period they were made, and where they would have been used?
My parents bought this desk from some friends who were moving back to Scotland in the mid 1970s. They (the friends) acquired it used when they moved to southern California in the early 1960s. It has a pullout on both sides for writing, and the bottom drawer on the right-hand side is deep (it looks like 2 drawers on the outside).
The chair doesn't match the desk, but they were obtained at the same time.
Thanks in advance for the sharing of all the knowledge out there.
I think you got the dates about right, when I worked for the government I had to write off a lot of these old desks and chairs. The chair confuses me because they never had that apron at the top across the chair back. That must have been added later.
I agree with Phil and will add that in the 50's & 60's these were also used by schools for teachers desks. I also agree about the crest board on the chair, I never saw that before either.
So - is the chair from the same period? It is possible that my dad added the crest board. I know they both liked to refinish and work on furniture - and they bought it from their friends and "worked on it" and sent it off to grad school with me.
I have a desk almost exactly like this one. I have to get rid of it as it takes up to much room. Does anyone know if it is worth anything. I hate to just take it to the dump. I can store it for awhile. I remember these as teachers desks. The only difference I see is mine has a lock in the center of the shallow middle drawer. Mine is not in as good condition but I don't believe it has ever been worked on.
