This pair of vases from Sweden work well together. Their size and form interest me. How did these guys make such perfect forms in miniature?
Carl-Harry Stålhane for Rörstrand is the larger vase. It is 15.5 cm tall = 6.1 ins. It is marked with the R and three crowns, CHS and the model code SOT. The glaze is a matt black/brown combination.
The smaller vase is marked with incised G for Gutavsberg, a hand and Friberg. The glaze is a brown haresfur that blends to a cobalt blue at the base. The hand mark signifies a studio piece. It is a real miniature .... only 5.75 cm high = 2.3 ins.
They both date to the mid 1960's.
You will have to give me lessons in modern ceramics. I want to know more!
A lovely ceramic duo... the Stålhane vase is one of a series, indicated by the markings to the base, and quite likely made from a mould taken from an original designed by Stålhane but thrown for him by one of his factory throwers at Rörstrand (Sven Wejsfelt was one of his throwers for a while). Hard to say without handling the piece. Stålhane was not a thrower.
Thanks for posting the lovely pics!
The Friberg miniature is very lovely, in his typical haresfur glaze applied by spraying to achieve subtlety and depth. These hand signed Friberg pieces were designed, thrown and glazed by Friberg himself at the Gustavsberg Studio. The museum there has a fantastic collection of pieces by Friberg, Stig LIndberg and KÃ¥ge (who originally set up the studio and, with great foresight, employed both Stig Lindberg and Berndt Friberg.
