Adjustable and ruled. Made of wood, and brass with adjusting nuts. Friend picked up as curiosity at an estate sale and asked me what it was. Any ideas?

Also called a "butt marker". They come in single and double pin depending on what you are laying out. If you work with wood you already have one, if you plan to work with wood buy one, they are inexpensive.

Carpenters marking gauge. Dovetails, tenons, mortises, planing, jointing etc. Very useful item for any craftsman. I have one with the pin removed and the hole enlarged to take a pencil so I can use it for marking on metal.
