This is an amazing Duluth Trunk Factory antique trunk I just picked up. It is in fantastic, original condition, and is a top of the line model. These were sold as "Octogon trunks" although many people call them bevel top trunks. I have many trunk catalogs referring to these as octogon trunks, even though there are technically six facets. I believe the octagon name was derived from the top portion being half an octagon. The trunk is covered with an embossed sailcloth, painted with a heavy coat of lacquer, which looks black but is actually a very dark green. The handles are original, but I had to reproduce the lid lifter as it was torn in two. The slat clamps, #5 latches, handle holders, hinges, and corner binding on front, are all tinned. The rare, secret keyhole lock is made from nickel plated brass. I have seen these in brass, but this is the first I have seen nickel plated. Nickel plating was found on only the best trunks, like this one. Other hallmarks of a high end trunk, that this one shares, are Irish linen lining, ornate slat end protectors, #5 tinned latches, continuous nailing, iron center bands, and the rarely seen built in lid stay. This trunk measures 36" long, 23' wide, and 28" high.

Looks awesome Jim!!!
Truly a magnificent piece of craftsmanship -- embossed sailcloth??? wow that's new to me. A stellar trunk all around!
Very cool Jim, love the hardware on it, the lock, latches, and those front corners. Embossed sailcloth, amazing, if you hadn't told me I would have guessed leather from the pictures, I also like the extra little tin work that trunk makers did, the points on the slats really set it off, nice added detail. nice job on cleaning her up, looks great. greendog
This is beautiful! So unusual. I love it!
Awesome trunk Jim great to see this one survive. I must say that my favorite thing
(other than the hardware) on this trunk are the initials F.A.T. on the side slat. I love a Quirky set of initials that fit the trunk, these sure do.
Thank you everyone.
Jim
