I have been looking for a trunk like this for years and found this one this week. It is in good condition. Seems to be covered by a type of paper or canvas. I would like to leave it this way. Any ideas on a way to protect this covering? Also would like to know if anyone knows an approximate age of the trunk. It is enormous about 30 inches High by 26 deep and 40 long. I really love it and way To keep it as it is
Fabulous trunk...love it!...:-)
It looks like the paper has already been coated to protect. I like to use Clear satin matte finish in a spray can by Krylon on any paper surfaces.
Thank you for the suggestion Drill
Hello: I would not make any drastic changes to it, unless you want to make it a show piece, and sell it. It looks GREAT to me the way it is now. You may want try clear lacquer, or shellack, to preserve the paper, as the japanese have been using it for years. There is a restoration book for old trunks online for 30 bucks, but it is also available at the local library for free. Good luck, as I'm doing the same thing to an old trunk i picked up a couple weeks ago for cheap. I purchased leather mens wide belts at the thrift store, for 50 cents, purchased a NOS lock with 2 keys for 29 bucks, and the 1/4 inch slats are very cheap at home depot. Seek, and Ye Shall Find.
