I am very pleased to be able to share a beautiful example of what I believe is an early Loetz vase, c. 1890. This is a beautiful clear deep apricot-orange colored glass that deepens as it gets to the neck of the vase (it is also slightly more pink at the base). It is completely covered on all sides with detailed gilt work that has very little wear, especially considering the age of the vase. It stands 7-1/8” (18cm) tall and has a cut and polished rim.

The vase came to me from the England. I recognized the shape of the vase as early Loetz, as shown in Dr. Kai Hasselbach’s excellent article 'An attempt to identify early Loetz production from 1880 -1897' on Loetz.com. This evolving article based on Kai’s research is fascinating to read, and has opened the door to collectors being able to identify previously unknown examples Loetz’s early work.

The vase is decorated in the Japonisme style popular at that time, featuring gilt prunus blossoms with branches and leaves scrolling over the surface of the vase. It is a little jewel of a vase, and will have a special place in my collection.

Very nice, not so sure on the Loetz attribution, but very nice piece.

Fantastic! Delicately beautiful! That would look wonderful with a spray of blossoms in it!

Brian, thanks so much. I appreciate you taking a look. I realize that the decor is quite Harrach-like, and am open to it being eventually attributed that way; the shape and colors for now lead me to the Loetz attribution. This is such an interesting area of research - I am really appreciate of all of the people who have been looking into this and thinking about it, including yourself. It is one of the things I love about our glass collecting community.

Sammyz, thank you! I appreciate your comment! Now you have me thinking about which kind of flower would be the best choice! :)

Michelle I believe so, ;-0, this piece would have is own little space in your already majestic collection, fabulous decoration and the size just perfect.
      Congrats on this new acquisition.

Alan, thanks so much. I am so glad you like it! I agree it is a perfect size - not too big, not too small. ;)

Such a clever collector you are Michelle, you seem to find the most amazing pieces.
As you say the gilt work is in fantastic condition, but for me the delight is the colour and shape of the vase itself. Those 4 sections are beautiful.

Inky, thank you very much! I can't believe how fresh the enameling still looks - the sun hits it in the mid-morning and the gold just shines. :)
