I am not interested in obtaining an appraisal, but I am curious if anyone knows what this was used for? It appears to be a hanging scale slotted weight but I have yet to find anything comparable online. It weighs 43 pounds and is over 100 years old. The only marking left are a -3W which makes me wonder if the dash is a 4 or if that's a coincidence. 43W=43 pounds.

This is obviously a ball from the ill-fated field game "Hammerball", a precursor to football, where the quarterback spun the ball on a short chain and threw it down-field. There were no tackles since it was considered too dangerous to be near a receiver when the ball came down. The sport quickly fell out of favor since good receivers usually suffered contusions, broken bones, concussions, and often death.
