I purchased this desk several years ago at an auction and have no history on it. I've been told it may be a teacher's desk. I do know from the wear that it is very old. Not a typical secretary desk because the writing surface lifts up. The writing surface would be used in the closed position as it has a little ledge there...much like a podium I suspect. Can anyone help me on this? Any idea of the value?

Looks like Bob Cratchit's desk. He was the clark for Scrooge.

I'm ultimately looking for the value of the desk. I will need to sell it in the near future. Anyone have an idea?

It's a School Masters desk. I have one of the exact same design. The only difference being the legs are square and tapered on mine. and mine in a light color wood. It's been dated to the 1830s very recently by two antique dealers who told me I wasn't asking enough for it priced at $1800.00. Yours looks to be a bit later vintage. I got on here to learn more about what I had when I saw this one. I posted it locally on C.L. for $2800.00 yesterday and have had several interested parties contact me already. Good luck.Bob

Thanks so much bossnews1. That's very interesting and very good news indeed. I suspected 1800's but that confirms what I was thinking. I'd love to see a photo of yours...will look it up. Thanks again.

seems pretty solidly empire, so 1830s to 1850 seems right. not too many fussy details or i would date later.
