No age to this brooch, I don't think - I'm pretty sure it's not 1893 - but so beautifully done! I don't know a thing about it, otherwise. Enjoy and thanks for looking.

    UPDATE: Russian lacquerware. Thanks Celiene!

In my opinion it could be 1893, I can't see that clasp and hinge being 1993, it very unusual. The style also looks Victorian, I might be wrong, I'll be interested in other people's views. Good look with your research.

Jean, I had wondered about that pin, but it just looked new to me....the style is definitely Victorian but it didn't really occur to me that it might actually BE Victorian. That would be great.

I was wondering if the black material (stone) could be jet, which was used extensively during the Victorian era.

The clasp isn't the same but it does have the Enamel flowers.

Nice Bonnie, I bought over 40 of these 4-5 years ago, and since have found a few more, and if the price was right I bought them too. I've seen them selling for up to $40., but have never paid more than $2. When I got the lot of them, I paid just $10. because the seller found them in a storage locker, and didn't want to mess with them. I think they're great, look good with dress, or jeans! :^)

Brooches like these are often referred to as "Russian Orphan Brooches." Some of them were made and sold to raise money for orphans in Russia. They are lovely, and each one is unique. I currently have three in my personal collection, and I love wearing them. The great thing about them is that each one is unique.
