I was lucky to find this beautiful vase a few weeks ago, and was even more lucky to receive it as a birthday gift soon afterwards from my husband, who always has been a willing supporter of my glass habit. ;)
I have always loved this shape, which was used by Loetz for many different decors. It think it must have been a favorite of theirs, too, and the twisting surface beautifully plays with the light and shows off iridescent decors to their best advantage. I have never, however, seen this color before in Loetz, and I absolutely love it.
My photos were taken in indirect natural light, with no flash. It has a very strong raspberry iridescence, but the base glass is a cool blue-gray with a hint of purple. It is 9.75" tall, with a finely ground pontil. I have had some really interesting conversations with Deb Fitzsimmons of Loetz.com about a possible color name for my vase. (Thanks, Deb!) Loetz used many different colors of glass for their pieces, and Loetz.com lists the colors they used in both German and English (http://www.loetz.com/identifying-loetz-glass/loetz-colors). We have discussed and looked at quite a few possible colors that my vase may have been made in, but have not settled on any for sure. Any thoughts are welcome!
I LOVE THE COLOUR OF GLASS & THE SUBTLE IRIDESCENCE & THE CONTORTED SHAPE ABSOLUTELY FAB !!!!!!!! MICHELLE
Malkey, thanks so much! I am so glad you like it. It is on our mantle now, and as one walks by, the colors change constantly due to the shape of the vase. It is really a favorite of mine! :)
Bergblau?
Thanks, Warren! I was hoping for your thoughts! :) That is one of the colors Deb and I discussed as a possibility. She said that to her it is a bit of a greenish blue, and I could see that in some of the examples shown on Loetz.com, so I was leaning away from it. But of course you have seen other examples in person, and I haven't. We also thought perhaps Rauchamethyst (smoky amethyst) could be a possibility...
Nutsabotas6, thank you! :)
I love these 'propellor' vases, and a real eye opener on the decor, thanks for posting Michelle.
Thanks so much Phil! I have always loved this shape, too, and was very lucky to come across one in this color. :)
What an interesting find! I love to see new stuff. Thanks for showing!
Isn't the shape wonderful......it has so much movement in it!
Thanks Sammyz - I am glad you like it!
Peggy, thank you; having 'movement' is a perfect description for it! :)
So..so!!.. very beautiful!...:-)
WOW what an amazing vase!
inky, thanks so much! :)
Fran, thank you! I am glad you think so! :)
Hi Michelle
Looks a lot like a paler version on Heckert's Cypern ... many of which look like they could have come from Loetz (blanks) ... initial thought was amethyst from the pics ... could als look fo Osiris or "Hellosiris" ...
Hi Steve, that's great - I'll look into your information - thanks so much! I thought you might have some ideas! :)
metal-violett?
Thanks, Sammyz - I'll have to look for some examples of that! :)
