    (50 items)

    Hi,

just bought this at an estate sale and the lady didn't know
    anything about it.
I'm not sure if this turned wooden, footed and lidded box was for
    storing sewing stuff, or what.
Does you know how old it is and what it was used for?
    Thanks!

    Nessa

      Treenware

I love this piece! So, I had to search for it...I may be way off base but it may be something called Treenware (see below). Do a internet search of Treenware and you will find similar items to your "thing". It says it was used for spices, as a drinking cup and even ashes...I imagine not all by the same piece, I hope.... Anyways, I love it and you have a great find there...

The word "treen" comes from the middle English and means "wooden." Treen is distinctively different than other pieces made from wood such as furniture or cabinetry in that it is a name for small handmade household items such as bowls or spoons.

      Thanks for your reply.
Yes, I sure hope they wouldn't use this one piece both
for spices, drinking from and ashes!!

What does it smell like inside? It may be for pipe tobacco, or tea. :^)

Just smells "old", like wood (neither tobacco or tea smell).......

Yes, It's treenware. Usually meaning turned wood item. Sometimes for novelty, other times as a protective outer case for glass (old medicine bottles, iv'e got a few)
The one you have, looks like it had a purpose, ie. tobacco or tea. The smell would have faded by now, but there is not alot of wear, hand patina, like it had been open & closed a lot. But, the shape of that one is more like an urn. It could have been a more affordable option back in the day for cremation as opposed to a "golden" urn. Just a thought...
