Wow -- really great trunk -- first time I've seen that front design. Emblems on the top equally fabulous! Rather unique in my books but have no idea who would have made it... others on this site may be able to help. The patent date will help you find what company made the hardware but not necessarily who made the trunk. Welcome to Collector's weekly!

Wow is my reaction too. Beautiful trunk. I wouldn't worry too much about who made it. Is that patent date from the 1860s? It is probably over 100 years old.

Should I have it restored or leave it as is, I love it so much and would hate to do something to it, to make it not a collectors item

Hard to make out date but yes it looks like 1860 to me

Such a great trunk hardly anything to refinish on it... even the hardware is shiny. Looks like crystallized tin... wouldn't touch that. Maybe put some ting oil on the slats - I use Howard's orange beeswax furniture polish on my trunks to freshen them up.

      Should read "tung oil"

Would polishing the hardware help to read it better? Want to clean that part up but don't want to use anything that I shouldn't on it

If it were mine I would refinish it but that's just me, you wont hurt any value, if its done well, you will increase the value. its not the kind of trunk that has high collectors value, that being said I wished I had it, super nice looking ornate trunk, and the date is not 1860, this style of trunk was patented in 1880 by CA Taylor, the hardware should say March 6 1880, which was also patented by Taylor, however this style of trunk and the hardware was made for decades. I would say late 1880's to early 1890's give or take a bit, and as trunkman said it was crystallized tin at one time, gold was the most popular color I think someone has done a little work on it already, all the sliver parts are very clean and some of the nail heads are silver, maybe not, but never the less a very nice trunk. greendog

P.S. this style of trunk was made by many trunk makers and without a label almost impossible to say by who.

Wonderful trunk , I especially like the dark stained edges on the slat ends, only a
very few better manufacturers used this technique.Incidentally one of them was Martin Maier. I wonder what the back hinges look like,as certain hinges could potentially confirm that manufacturer? Thanks for the post.

Trunk tray patent that may partially apply.

It has a lid stay Drill, so I don't think it has MM corner hinges.
    13. Drill Drill, 8 years ago
You are quite correct Greendog I don't think it has them either. I do believe it is another manufacturer as well.
