Last week I was on a holiday in Finland... of course I chose the date on purpose so I could attend the annual glass market held around the Finnish Glass Museum (Suomen Lasimuseo) in Riihimäki.

I had already gotten the red and green vases years ago (in fact the red one was one of the first Nanny Still items I ever got and the green one I got like... maybe 10 years ago, so getting the blue one in the size missing in my collection had been one of my fantasies for years! The night before the market I dreamt I found the blue vase, but I wasn't really sure about the colour... so most of the dream was some kind of continuus questioning "is it blue? is it green?"... well, you all know how dreams are.

So... on Saturday morning we take the train to Riihimäki, walk the 2 km. and a bit to the museum and start enjoying the market... when we've seen about half of the stands... there it is: the medium sized blue Pajazzo! and the stand was surrounded by trees and the leaves and the grass were really green... so the light had an amazing touch of green about it and I really cannot tell wich colour the vase is... the seller had a couple of Pajazzo vases in green so I knew this one had to be the blue one, but suddenly I question myself... "is it blue? is it green?" just like in my dream!!! It wasn't cheap but of course I coudn't leave it there... I really really HAD to get it!

We got other items... all of them amazing, but this one is THE special find from the Riihimäki market!

Last pic... that's sort of 85% of my nanny items ;)

Hi austrohungaro. Wow, these are amazingly weird vases, very unusual, I've never seen them before. Your collection looks great too, full but not cluttered...how do you do that!!

A well deserved find Austro. Is that a complete set for you now, or are you still on the hunt?

It would be a dream for me to sit and look at every piece of your collection; it is stupendous.

Thanks guys for all the loves and comments!

Well, Fran... yes, they are so weird! I started collecting a kind of glass that was utterly simple in shape -just like Lütken's stuff from the 50s and 60s: massive glass, one coloured soft surfaces...-, but when I saw Nanny Still's work I fell in love with it... My mind knew it was not the kind of glass I liked but still it had this unusual shapes and textures that made it soooo attractve! I remember the first three items I got were a Neptuna bottle (http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/39379-neptuna-set-nanny-still-riihimki-las?in=collection-496), a Sultaanni decanter (http://www.collectorsweekly.com/stories/40373-sultaanni-nanny-still-riihimki-lasi?in=collection-500) and the red Pajazzo... and all of them share that weirdness in both shape and texture, and even in colour!

Yes, getting the unclattered look in a collection this big is a great old art... hahaha; well, I think the only mistery about it is grouping the items in series, so the eye meets "one group of" instead of "twenty pieces of"... just take a look at the big orange vases at the bottom or at the second top shelf with all those green pieces... because they have the same colour and more or less simmilar shapes, the eye tends towards grouping them as one unit, as it happens with the black and white items on the second bottom shelf. But if you take a look at the two pink and one blue pieces on the middle shelf, as well the green, pink and yellow Sultaanni items, then in spite of having different colours, the eye meets simmilar shapes, and then tends to group them too.

By the way, I usually call these "the titties vases", and people always know which vases I'm talking about hahahahahaha

Well, Karen, whenever you happen to be in Madrid just let me know and our doors are open for you! It will be like visitng the Prado Museum but you'll be able to actually touch the works ;)

love the colours & organic forms superb collection !!!!!!!! austro
    7. austrohungaro austrohungaro, 7 years ago
      Thanks Malkey!!!

By the way, Karen, yes, the series consists of three shapes and it was made in three colours, so now I have a sample of each one of them combined in the three vases... that's the way I like to collect when a series comes likes this.

THANK YOU austrohugaro, for this (partial) comment earlier:

"By the way, I usually call these "the titties vases", and people always know which vases I'm talking about hahahahahaha"

That's EXACTLY what I first thought too, when you first posted...

      Hello Austrohungary,
I have been following your posts and some other posts featuring Nanny Still items. I collect solely Nanny Still and just started posting here with two items.
This color matter with Pajazzos goes many times unnoticed, I bought a similar vase as yours described as yellow-green but noticed in the picture that it was yellow-blue. Now just noticed one (lower wider one) at an action that seems to be also to my surprise a yellow-blue one. I think I read somewhere that less that 10% of the Pajazzos were made in yellow-blue color.

      Take care!

Hi Scanditech! So I wasn't the only one having problem s wuth this colour combination... that makes me feel less silly, hahahaha.

So I read about the only 10% of blue Pajazzos. At some point my intention was getting the three vases in the tree colours but thinking og how long it took me to get my blue one... I don't want to be in my 90s and still in the search f my last Pajazzo!

      Hello,

I just saw your collection, its GREAT, whats even better for me is that you seem to have a complete set of Neptuna. I am looking to get a complete set of them, along with Ambra, which I also love.

If you ever get bored of them and want to find a good home for them, let me know, they can have a nice home with me in England. :-)
