A friend at the flea market had this pair today. I recognized that they are really nice because i was studying these gilded, coral ground pieces recently for a narcissus pot i found. there is no comparison in my opinion - these vases are GORGEOUS! they are very hard to photograph, because the gilding is very fine and has to catch the light to show up right. it's different on these too, because part of them is in what looks like tarnished silver, while other parts are gold. i've never seen that. i don't dare polish them though for fear of wearing the gold off.

They are just under 10 inches tall, and they are both wheel-thrown in two pieces and then joined. one is slightly larger at the base than the other. i thought they had totally different designs until i spinned them around a few times together and realized that they are a mirror pair.

the gold on the birds was seriously tarnished and i took it off with a clean rag and some tarn-x. i guess the gold birds had silver in them? strange. i also figured how to take pics of them - and it wasn't easy. by laying them down horizontally outdoors, the photos really show up. i replaced all the photos. are those big birds ho-ho birds?

so far, the jury seems to think that these are late 19th century or early 20th century. i'm not totally convinced yet. they seem to think that the color is not right for kangxi, but i think it's a solid iron red color. maybe my photos are off?
