Well today I surveyed a woman's house and I found this little vase sitting on a shelf in the lounge. As I am trying to learn about glass items, and I was intrigued by the colours and pattern, she let me photograph it so that I could post it on here with some questions as a learning exercise. For info, it was about 6 or 7" tall.

So, the first thing is, I know very little about glass, and what I do know has come from me reading posts and looking at pictures on here. Now with that in mind, my thoughts as soon as I seen it went to Loetz, as many of the pieces that are posted are of this colour and iridescent sheen. Obviously that is me being naïve as I'm sure there are many other companies who do the same thing, so how do you tell them apart? Is it purely quality? That is difficult for someone who has not handled many pieces as you do not have a 'baseline' for what is great and what is average. For instance, would a Loetz have no faults? i.e. a bubble in the glass? Or as these items are hand blown, would this be acceptable, or are they so exclusive that no flaw would pass quality control to preserve the superb quality that is expected of every piece?

Secondly, would makers like Loetz cover the base also? This one is not decorated to the base, is that standard for most manufacturers? I wasn't sure if the top quality ones would go the extra mile and do the bottom also.

Any thoughts on the above questions would be really helpful.

    Thanks
    Hamish

Thanks Malkey. I guess there-in lies the problem, how do you tell the modern cheap ones from the special ones, as to the untrained eye they look the same. If someone put a loetz in front of me next to this one I'm wondering if I would be able to tell the difference. You are right it is nice, apparently she found it at a boot sale for 50p a couple years ago. Do you know the answer to my 'decorating the underside ' question?

I think this is a piece of Heron Glass. I used to visit their Glassworks in Ulverston , Cumbria, and bought a lot of their glass. I have just had a trawl through my Heron Glass and mine is identical to yours!

Hammish that base ( bottom ) of the vase looks ground flat , the decoration you speak of is the color / sheen on the vase or the extra thick areas of glass making the form of vase ? So many makers of nice art glass , I am still learning alot from members here and sites on line . I look for glass books always when out to help me as well .
