I got this item from someone's trash. It was put out with some other folding outdoor chairs that I stopped to salvage for my son & his wife.
Once I took a better look at this piece when I got home I realized that this was nothing ordinary. Is is super soft to the touch, and it appears that it is handmade. The hardware is nothing modern that I've seen. It functions wonderfully too, better that modern folding tables & chairs. It's an absolute treat to look at the craftsmanship of this piece.
I have found similar folding stools and chairs online from the Ming Dynasty with similar hand carvings. Could this really be that old?? Those other items I have found online are made of huanghuali which is a rosewood with a red tint or color. Underneath this stool I can see hints of a red color?
I am stumped. I contacted a very reputable auction house in Columbus, Ohio & they would not even take money for an appraisal because they don't see enough Asian Antiques to learn them!
If anyone can think of any resources where I can look for info. that would be wonderful. I feel like I have reached the end of the internet! LOL! :)

I don't know if you've seen this one Lisa, it's a little more ornate, but still similar.

Foot rest and dragons, have same features, hope it helps! :^)

At the estimate of value of the Alain Truong stool it might be worth having yours checked very closely! :^) WOW! LOL

I can't answer your question but I will ask one. How did you establish this was hand carved?

As for being rosewood, I have a bunch of it in my shop and this must be a new species if it is actually rosewood. The color and grain are both off.

Perhaps today will be a learning day for me.

Perhaps today will be a learning day for me too. Since you have a bunch perhaps you can post some photos so I can look at yours? What kind of wood does it look like to you?

lisap311 - If you click my name and go to my page, scroll down my posts until you see the one titled, A little wooden fun. Open that. Far back left side there are two vases almost identical, one tall one short. Those are both rosewood turned from the same turning block of wood.

Here's a link showing Ming furniture, made of huanghuali wood:

      http://shibapinminghuanghualifurniture.blogspot.com/2011/

Apparently the wood bleaches very quickly when exposed to sunlight, but has that soft touch as you call it Lisa. I hope this helps, more! :^)
