I bought this from a friend for a couple of bucks. Made of brass and covered in butterfly designs. Does it hang from a chatelaine? What does one do with it?

    Thanks for stopping!

Well the wife of knowledge says it is a Victorian Pomander. You would put a natural sponge soaked in fragrance inside the ball and it was used to alleviate bad odours whilst out and about.

Actually probably none of the above as it is a beautiful design but an item plagarized and copied from a 1930 design By Edgar Brandt, who made most of them as Christmas gifts and are available by auction nowadays but for a big edgar brandt price ! In Middle On row 6, Google :
      https://www.google.com/search?newwindow=1&site=&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1120&bih=571&q=edgar+brandt+christmas+ornament&oq=edgar+brandt+christmas+ornament&gs_l=img.12...3588.3588.0.5841.3.3.0.0.0.0.87.87.1.1.0....0...1.2.64.img..2.0.0.0.UV3w19S3hEc#imgrc=UtF3ISq-YiBsbM:

Unfortunately I have lots of info in my books, but hard to do edgarbrandt on computer as everything is poisoned now by Pinterest.

Based on "An Art Deco wrought Iron Mistletoe paperweight by Edgar Brandt, 1921." might give more info than Pinterest all over again. They made them in wrought iron and bronze. Somewhat bigger than your locket.

@Phil - all I see are lamps and a mistletoe paperweight that somewhat resembles my pomander.

@Hamish - Interesting! It's possible that it's an oldie, as the woman I bought it from is in her 70s and this piece belonged to her mother.

Ironically, I actually have a bit of experience with the shape and was going to say absolutely a pomander! I spent a great deal of time when a bit younger when I was originally going to be writer researching authentic day Victorian items that were truly used (not jewelry unfortunately or my 'learning' would have helped me there too), but in terms of their every day existence, games they truly played, etc.

I could still be wrong, but I have to agree with Ms.CrystalShip... pomander/vinaigrette, etc. (smelling salts or in the case of traveling through certain cities in Europe to mask undesirable smells when out and about or traveling in a horse and carriage). It could be used for perfume, snuff, etc.

Seriously google pomanders and vinaigrettes....even if that is not what it turns out to be, they are great fun to look at!
