Hi
I have a painting (or print - Im not sure) by, I believe, the Chinese artist Xu Beihong.
I am very aware there are many copies out there and I would like to find some where/someone who can give me more information.
The paper is "lined" paper and there is some slight foxing near the bottom. This suggests the paper is quality and that it has some age to it.
If anyone has any ideas or can give me their opinion I would really appreciate it.

I don't know that 'foxing' guarantees age. It may just be where someone has touched the paper and had oil on their fingers. I am not positive about that. What I do know is if you have a jewelers loupe, or if your eyes are good enough a magnifying glass might do. Take it outside for the natural light and look at it closely. If you see dots, which would be the pixels, then it is a print. If you don't see patterns like that and see brush strokes, you may have yourself a treasure. Let us know what happens. I had one with I think it was 8 horses. It was way to huge and I gave it to my friend.

It is definitely not a litho but I cant quite work out if it is a screen print or an original. I'm looking to see if the paint "bleeds" into the paper fibres but even with my loupe, I'm not experienced enough to work it out.
The foxing is there for sure but, like you say, not an exact science to work out the age.

You are very welcome. I believe if you take it to a frame shop, they may be able to help you. I only know that when it's a print, it's an almost instant realization. Also, when it's an older print, the pixels are patterned differently. May I ask how you came about this? I suppose the real question would be, do you think the people you got this from knew what it was? It's pretty hard to tell and I know on some sites things like this, well, anything really, are sold as authentic. There aren't enough people or watchdog groups to keep an eye on that. I hope for your sake that it's legit. Even if it comes down to being a print, it's still very nice. Especially if it's a much older print!

I bought it in a dusty second-hand shop (hidden in a pile of junk!). The owner of the shop, who I know as I am a regular customer, said that he got it in from a house clearance of an old professor...
I paid next to nothing for it so no big investment. I bought it as I liked it (obviously!) - but it would be nice to know exactly what I have. (You now how it is I'm sure.. half the fun in buying stuff is the research!).
I know the artist died in 1953 and he was working in Europe at one time (I'm living in Belgium at the moment).
I will definitely take it to a professional for an opinion - but was impatient, thus my post on here!
