A beautiful little piece of glass by Iwata Kuri, dating to around 1985.
I had assumed this was a sake glass but after being questioned cleverly on it (thanks Ivonne!) I have now found out it is a small holder for tea to be used in the tea ceremony. Iwata produced many beautiful works for the tea ceremony.
In this later part of his life Iwata played with subtle surface finishes, often in gold with spatter or trailing. This is a lovely piece, despite it's small size of 10cm. I suggest you enlarge the pics to get a better idea.
Is this a small glass to drink or bigger to serve sake?I always thought they drink sake from small bowls.
This is a beautiful piece of glass.
To be honest Ivonne I assumed it was a sake glass, as that is what the seller called it. I have looked through details of Iwata's works and have found these small jug-like items to be called Kazari Tsubo, a tea jar for the tea ceremony. I am assuming it was to store matcha, or powdered tea. Glad you asked; made me research ! :)
Wonderful surface texture, particularly evident when enlarging image two.
This little beauty is certainly unique Karen :) The ribs on the sides, with the gold running through them, reminds me of Barovier's Cordonato D' Oro design.
Thanks Peggy. It is quite a complex decor for such a small piece.
So of course I had to look that up Rick! Yes, I can see where you are coming from there. I am impressed with those Barovier pieces, and your knowledge of course. Thanks mate!
Love the seashell look of this!
Thanks VL, glad it appeals.
Lovely! I like the splatter...gives it more dimension and transforms it into something even more beautiful. I cannot believe it is SO TINY with so much detail!
I am amazed too Karen. He was a great artist. Thanks for the love and comment.
