I found this petite secretary in Charlottesville, VA in early April. My husband and I drove through snow between Beckley, WV and Lewisburg, WV to pick it up.

The secretary had a considerable amount of surface scratches, and there were slightly deeper scratches that looked like they had been made by a medium to large dog. The finish on the claw-and-ball feet was badly worn, and the entire piece was very dirty.

After we got home, we gave the piece a good cleaning, and started coating it with Howard's Restor-a-Finish. We were amazed at what a good job it did covering the scratches. The shine came back to the piece once we applied the Howard's Feed and Wax. I only wish I could post more pictures to show what a difference it made. Perhaps I will make a second post to add more pictures.

The secretary is believed to be between 60 and 70 years old. The previous owner said it had been in her family for over 60 years, and that they had bought it used.

I have a secretary that came from my Mother's house. She is in the Nursing Home with Alzheimer's. She doesn't even know what I'm talking about when I ask, so I'm seeking an answer somewhere else. There is a locked door behind the desk-table door and we cannot figure out how to open it. I've tried everything I could find on the internet. If I ever get it opened, I will make sure it never gets closed again. I don't think there is anything behind it but I sure could use the space for a couple of desktop items. Does anybody have any idea how to open this door???

Mine does not have a lockable door inside the desk area. My only suggestion would be to consult a local locksmith. Their rates are usually low.

Thank you for responding so quickly! I don’t think a locksmith could open this door. There is some kind of sequence to be able to access it. But thanks!!!
