Dear CW's this is not my usual type of post but my husband found this bottle whilst clearing out the garage. It says E. Logsdon Sun Hotel Hitchin. In 1888 E Logsdon played football for Hitchin Town Football Club and then managed the brewery at the Sun Hotel in 1890. We think my son found this bottle many years ago, either with a school trip or later on a boys night out !! It has this unusual marble inside it rolling around and after cleaning all the dirt off I thought I might see if my local museum want it. We live in Hitchin and the Sun Hotel hasn't changed much in the last 100 years although there isn't a brewery attached to it anymore. I can't believe this bottle is over 100 years old and no idea about the marble but hoping Malkey might help with some info xx

That's a very interesting bottle for sure!! I love looking up the history of these old hotels. They really fascinate me.

It's a Codd-style bottle (utilises that marble), most popular in England till the 1910s. Some were in use till the 1950s in some areas of Europe and Asia. Japan uses them today. The carbonated pressure forces the marble into the neck to seal it against a rubber gasket. Reusable, so long as the gasket was good.

Wow you know your stuff. My son is very impressed with his bottle and whilst it has no value, whatsoever, I think it's great and will offer it to the museum if they're interested. Thank you so much SpiritBear and billretirecoll for all the help. Great stuff.

I can see why old inns and hotels are fascinating Scott. I feel very lucky to have so many in my town, especially as most of them are pubs ha ha.
