While in hot pursuit of the matching pattern of a Prochaska rainbow glass blitz vase (Ausf. 2), I stumbled upon a pattern for a piece that I've had for several years.

Picked up at auction almost a decade ago, I had always believed it to be Loetz, but had never found the shape or the Phaenomen Genre before.

It's the same shade shown on page 443 in the Musterbuch. PN II-4522. The shape is identical to the paper pattern which shows pulled feathers like this shade, and the color info, which loosely translates to "Base opal inside silver crumbs and dark blue crumbs dotted with opal spun (Dark blue = shell green / finish)." You can see this shade does have a base layer of opal glass, and the silber and dunkelbergblau "crumbs" closely resemble a papillion finish in platinum teal blue, a stunning color, with pulled golden feathers going around the sides.

The shade measures approximately 6" x 7.5" with a fitter of 3 inches. The Musterbuch shade measurements (standard conversion in parenthesis):

    fitter 80mm (3")
    top rim 155mm (6")
    height 180mm (7")

Note that the paper pattern shows two cutouts for this design. The difference? They have a different fitter arrangement on the base of the shade. The top one I believe sits on top of a lamp base (most lovely view of the shade!!), and the bottom one is made for a hanging shade with the fitter screwing into the shade base to hold it in place.

Another interesting bit on this shade, is that it's a Loetz commission piece. Commissioned by H.G. McFaddin, which you may recognize as the maker of Emeralite and Bellova lamps. Probably not well know, but Loetz made high end PG glass for McFaddin lamps. Not sure of the metal base origins, likely made in the U.S., but anything is possible in the world of business.

    Here's a site for "The Lamps of H.G. McFaddin & CO." http://emeralite.com/index-2.html

It's a beauty! Interestingly, we are currently working on identify PG decors for several Loetz shades and will have a large group of new PG's to roll out soon. In fact, Kai had just sent out the Quittenbaum example similar to your shade last week! If you like, we can also add your shade to the site for the roll out.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful shade and the great research too, Brian. This has been a very informative post. Quittenbaum!! Thank you. I mistakenly thought that Musterbuch was either a reference to Band 2 and then I went to my Cantz Loetz but obviously not that one either. Would you please, get out the blocks and enlighten me?

Thanks Lisa. I'm referring to the Loetz pattern book Jitka published in 2012. It covers most of 1900-1914, there are holes, but there's a wealth of new information.

IIRC Jitka was going to publish nine volumes/bands on the various patterns, studies, and the like. Not sure when/if the next volume/band will be released.

I've had various conversations with the powers to be regarding the additional publications from the Loetz archives mentioned in Series II and, sadly, these will likely not come to fruition.

Oh boy. I just read that only 300 copies were printed. ;o(

I just special ordered a couple of copies of the Series II books from our European distributor . PM me if you want me to reserve one for you.

Deb that was the impression I got when discussing the additional volumes with Jitka. Such a shame, I'd love to see anything else they have on the pre-1900 work.
