I would like to refinish this trunk but would like to keep it as close to original as possible, I didn't see any other trunks like it, does anyone know how I can find out?
It's metal covered except for the wooden slats the in side is gutted but it used to have compartments in the lid, lots of metal along the edges. Can anyone help?

Nice trunk, looks solid and in good shape, the question is, what is original , I believe the trunk has been painted all black at some time in its life. The smooth tin between the slats was probably what they called crystallized tin, gold was the most popular color, but it came in others, The remaining tin was black, wood slats where natural wood and the cast hardware was silver in color. You can rebuild the interior, compartments, tray and such, it would be a very nice looking trunk refinished, greendog.

I have a trunk that is IDENTICAL to this one! I have been looking for over 3 years to find another one like mine and until now have found nothing. I am currently in the process of restoring my trunk and it sure has been a challenge. What greendog commented about the color is correct. After removing the slats around the bottom you can see the original gold and black paint. Can't tell you how excited I am to find this post!
