Hello everyone.
An antique shop find yesterday!!! First one I have ever seen in the flesh and did not know they even existed until Kyra posted her ones some time ago. The seller's tag showed Victorian Pen Wiper.
This one is really small being approx 2 inches x 2 inches. So cute!
I have no idea what the metal is, it is not attracted to a magnet and it is a light grey colour.
There does not appear to be a maker's mark on it, however this could have been on the tail, which sadly is missing......I might have to try and fashion one for it......might as well give it a go!
Probably a silly thing to say....it looks like a cat to me......hubby first thought dog......what say you?
The bristles seem to be old and original I think but not really sure.
I searched around on google but did not find any pen wipes that were this small.
I will mark this as a mystery as I am not totally convinced as to the age of this or perhaps it was a pin cushion to start and the bristles are not original to it.
Hope you like it anyway, I think it is adorable. Thanks Judy
Cute little fella' - whatever it may be :)
Ooh, Judy, this is a really adorable cat! ;-))
Metal is spelter, these figurines are sometimes described as "plomb de Nuremberg". On painted ones, the visible mold seam is the clue, weight too, lighter than plain bronze.
Bristles are original to it, worn and well used. Lots of cold painted pin cushions began their life as pen wipes, and were certainly transformed wen dip pens were no more in use!
The missing tail may worth a try to be replaced with modelled polymer clay (bake it apart after modeling on the cat, then fix it in place and patinate it to match the color).
Lots of fun with this cutie kitty :-))
