In antique images, bigger is usually better (with all other things being equal).
I purchased this image initially for the case. Half plate case are very desirable and this one looked to be in great shape with the exception of the split seam (typically found in these).
The ambrotype image appeared to be grainy and without tinting. When I got the image, I pulled it out of the case to clean the glass and noticed that from the back side it showed nice tinting. The image was still sealed between two sheets of glass, so I cleaned the back side as well and then reversed it in the matting and preserver.
I was amazed at how good it looked and now it will stay together and not be used just for the case!
As far as the child, I am not certain if it is a boy or girl.

The half plate case is really beautiful and the photo is great. Looks like a well fed baby.

A beauty Scott.
I think maybe girl, based on the dress's off the shoulder neckline and ribbons. Although little boys wore dresses as you know, this one seems too feminine.
Thanks racer-- could be.
