ABINGDON POTTERY 'windowbox' planter

This is a white ceramic 'windowbox planter' made by the ABINGDON POTTERY of Abingdon, IL. It features nicely scrolled 'handles' (which are likely hollow) at its ends including a very pretty 'leaf design' extending downward from them into its insides, along with a pleasantly 'fluted' length. Measuring about 14.5" long, 5.5" wide, and 4" deep, its underside shows the ABINGDON U.S.A. trademark as well as the number 532 molded into it.

The ABINGDON POTTERY was founded in the early 1900's and was first (and last) known for producing high quality porcelain plumbing fixtures -- they only produced 'art pottery' between 1934 and 1950. I'd guess (but don't know for sure) that this piece was closer to the end of that run.

This piece is particularly meaningful to me, not just because it came from Mom and Dad's home -- but also because Abingdon, IL happens to also be my own very first actual home on Planet Earth, and Dad actually worked in the offices of the Abingdon Pottery at the time. By then (late 1960's) the Pottery was again only manufacturing plumbing fixtures...the first house I recall living in was close to a lot where they dumped piles of 'rejects' which I remember playing in/with as a small child. [huge piles of broken shards of toilets...nowdays my folks would get sent to jail for allowing such "HAZARDOUS" play but I had fun anyway, and seem to have survived OK...?? <LOL>] As far as I know, the Pottery ceased business operations in the early 1970's.
