This is a WW1 era Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) soldier. He wears shoulder and hat insignia of the corps.
What I found most interesting about the image is his collection of trench art. He displays a coal scuttle, inkwell, ashtray and a large model windmill.
I don't know if he made the pieces or if they were purchases or gifts. It was common in the era for convalescing soldiers to make these type of items. Perhaps he supervised or directed the hospital craft shop?
The image has a backstamp of a Bolton photographer. Bolton is a town in Greater Manchester (wiki) and according to research housed a few hospitals during the Great War.
