This is the 1957 townplan board that accompanies the the car posted earlier. The set was lego's first departure from focusing purely on the act of building to include an element of creative play with the constructions after they had been built. The set included basic bricks to create a town and then HO scale cars, trees and roadsides and even little people etc to populate the town. It was very different from any other range before or since in that it included these extra accessories to play with which weren't actual lego.
The boy on the box is Kjeld Kristiansen, the grandson of Lego's founder, who went on to become the CEO of the company.
Picture 2 shows the board you get with it to lay out your town. This is the US and European board. I don't have a full set but am trying to collect as much as I can to make my own 1950s inspired creation. Will post it up when I do.
It will be great to see more of the early lego sets, good write up.
