I've just completed work on this Art Deco German Mauthe mantle clock, age '20's - '30's. With Westminster chimes this is a large clock 51cm wide 23cm high and built using Burr Maple. A most unusual veneer for clock use here in Australia. The grain is extraordinary. French polished with maple stain. The clock runs perfectly to time and has a deep and melodious chime, due to case size it resonates like a piano. The lead pendulum had expanded and cracked, an easy repair with UV plastic filler and gold paint, no added weight of significance affects the pendulum. A fine and unusual clock. I completely revamped the dial as it was in a dreadful state, paint missing. I decided on a totally non-traditional gloss black enamel with gilded numerals, I like the effect. I'm sorry I completely forgot to take a 'before' shot, oh well. Thankyou.

Using traditional methods and materials, the integrity of the case has been restored. Hot hide glue applied to the support struts and veneer base internally, will restore the clarity of the chimes resonance. I find that, though not at all traditional, sanding seal provides optimum results prior to staining and french polishing. A little goes a long way, so it is an inexpensive way to assist in a perfectly smooth finish and hardened wood veneer.
