No appliances, no diapers, Put the dirty clothere in a big tub and wash with a stick or paddle ,as the water boiled, and hang it on a line. Wash floors with dresses like this swirling around your shoes. Cook, Clean, and sill have time to knit, crochet and mend socks . Invite ladies in to have tea and cake.(and gossip a bit).
Hubby was the head of the house. And what he said was law. Make cookies and pies, pull taffy and roast the venison.
And be in church Wed night and Sunday morning, with the family as neat as a pin. No Valium, no mood elevators-- relax with just the family piano for fun with some neighboors around to sing...BRAVO! Photo in the 1870s.

This photo was not identifid--a septa photo beginning to fade on thin cardboard called a CDV. Could be as early or earlier than Civil War, but I just said 1870s to be sure. I darkened the phoro, but by doing that lost som of its "charm"

She looks quite well off, a lovely dress - I would think they have a maid - at lease someone to do the laundry.
