I am so pleased to acquire this vase by the late Itoko Iwata. Although she produced glass right until her death in 2008, I have found her work difficult to source, particularly within my budget.

This vase has a very Japanese aesthetic; the shape, the kimono like pattern, and the almost silk like finish.
My take on it is that it has been created by using metal foil and stenciled and flashed coloured glass over a white base. I'm happy to hear other ideas about technique.

It's typically tall at 26cm, and arrived in it's original box with artist's bookmark.

Note: the photos aren't mine, they are the vendors, which are much better than my own efforts. I have noticed that the photos on Japanese auction and sales sites are usually very well done, even by amateurs.

This is really an eye catcher Karen ! At first I thought the pattern looked like fish netting. The shape seems to defy any geometric category but it does remind me of facets in a gem...which it certainly is. :)

Thanks Alan. You may have seen it on a Facebook glass group.

Ivonne that's a pertinent comment. Lots of Japanese glass is made with traditional pottery styling.

      Hi Mike!
The fishing net is a good point; such an important tool for the Japanese. Maybe Iwata was thinking that! Thanks for the comment and idea.

Thanks so much Peggy. It is a very different and beautiful piece of glass. Quite Japanese too in style don't you think?

I've missed a lot of your recent posts Karen, and I'm gonna have to catch up little-by-little, but what a way to start! I've never seen a vase with anything remotely like this. I love of the angular shape and how the artist applied the multi colored "netting" so precisely without overlap. They're obviously very talented :)

I must echo what others and Rick just said. I love it and never seen anything like it either. You do post the most unusual glass. This is fabulous!

Great piece Karen that really catches your eye.It reminds me of a futuristic space age geometric bee hive.
    22. racer4four racer4four, 7 years ago
Thanks Rick, so good to hear from you. Itoko Iwata was a very talented glass blower, and like many of her era in Japan, quite experimental.
The shape is great isn't it! Glad you like it all :)

Hi Fran! Thanks for the compliment and love; I'm glad it's a fab one for you!
    24. racer4four racer4four, 7 years ago
Wow Jim, really getting into a description for me there! You know I can no longer look at this vase and not think of the futuristic space age geometric bee hive. Cool name; now stuck. Thanks! (I mean that sincerely)
