Jan Mergl states in his book "300 Years of Harrach Glass", p.308: “Like other Bohemian glass producers, Harrach Glassworks was strongly inspired and influenced by decorative glass forms designed by the American artist Louis Comfort Tiffany. Several samples of Harrach hot-shaped and decorated vases are almost exact copies of forms and decorations of the glass vessels presented in 1897 as part of a travelling exhibition of Tiffany’s work. After Paris, the exhibition was brought to Liberec (Reichenberg), thanks to the initiative of Gustav E. Pazaurek…
A direct template for the object was a vase, purchased from the main organiser of the Tiffany exhibition Samuel Bing for the collection of the Österreichisches Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Vienna.” This vase is currently on display in the MAK, see last image.
These Harrach vases (decor name: Tiffany Pfau) are of clear glass shaded to white opal, decorated with combed green and yellow threads, respectively. The tall vase (prod. no. 1693/10) is a close copy of the Tiffany vase. It was produced in two sizes (1693/10 = 30 cm, 1693/9 = 40 cm). One vase of the pair (prod. no. 1690/6) bears the original paper label (Harrach Neuwelt). Both vases are labelled with transparent luster color “Spittlerthor : Nürnberg and Sternhof : Nürnberg”, respectively (hardly legible). This seems to be the owner marks, as the Spittlerthor, a restaurant and hostel, did exist in Nuremberg.
It is hard to find Tiffany Pfau vases from Harrach. I looked for them for many years. Luckily, I got the pair and the tall vase recently within a few months.
