I bought this beautiful Travel Trunk/Chest in an auction over 12 years ago.
It measures Height: 25" Depth: 18" Length: 33".
I loved the design and the interior looked original, I also liked the fact it had the original lock which was stamped Eagle Lock Co. Terryville. CT, Pat. Dec. 4. 1877. lower was etched A 10 which I presumed was the key code. I have misplaced the key and I want to buy another so can anyone tell me where I can buy a replacement key. Another interesting thing which was really nice was when I looked inside the hat box there was an immaculate ladies white silk hat with a blue bow still in the hat box.
Would the covering on the trunk/chest be Alligator skin or embossed leather?
Would the trunk/chest have been made before the Pat. date on the lock or after?
Your trunk is around mid to late 1880's give or take a little, the covering is embossed tin in a very beautiful color, every think about the trunk looks original, you can probably find a # 10 key on e bay, search under trunk parts, greendog.
P.S. patent dates on individual parts show when that part was patented and not when the trunk was made, some trunk hardware was used for decades, greendog.
Thanks greendog that is very helpful. I really thought the covering was hide not tin but you are probably right, it probably is tin.
Put a magnet on it, it should stick, this will remove any doubt, greendog.
I did that already and you are absolutely right. Thanks again greendog for your knowledge.
You are very welcome, and thanks for posting it for us all to see, greendog.
