I thought i posted this here many years ago, but couldn't find it. i posted it recently on the FB Studio Pottery Identification page and the overwhelming response was that it is a piece by Viola Frey - a very famous oakland potter who died in 2004. It does look like her style, for sure. i've held onto it all these years because i like it and i thought it was by a well-known potter, for some reason. now, i think i know!
Really a special piece! And right on for Halloween :-)
From one artfoot to another - good foot! Frey-foot? One can hope. California College of the Arts in Oakland or the Oakland Museum may be able to assist in a positive attribution. I believe Viola Frey has some sort of legacy organization that can probably be contacted online.
thanks kyra and artfoot. i work at the oakland museum regularly and know most of the curators, so it shouldn't difficult.
