Many years ago, while researching Durand crackle vases, I came across this piece and have wanted one ever since. The original auction description was:
* "Extremely rare experimental Durand vase has vertical panels of rich deep blue alternating with panels of clear crackle. The consignor states the he showed the vase to the curator of the Museum of American Glass and he had not seen a vase in this unusual color and design" * James D. Julia auctions.
The only example we could find, sold in 2007, and no other pieces have come up at auction before or since, so I was hoping it was a one of a kind.
When it arrived, I compared it to the photo from the 2007 auction looking for a match, and Bingo, they were an exact match... pic 4.
What I found interesting, is in the book, "Durand the Man and His Glass", there is a similar example, not exact but similar, and is listed as a Lava decor. However, later in the book, it identifies the vase as: "Grotesque crackle vase with vertical rows of dark blue over crystal and lustred". It's obviously a lava décor, and I don't know why the book contradicts itself, so I'm simply going to refer to it as a Lava/Crackle vase.
One thing that was pointed out to me from another Durand collector, is the unfinished pontil. It was ground and left unfinished, whereas on all of the Durand pieces I've owned, the pontils have been ground and polished.
As always, thanks for looking :)
Quite the find. Looks you have a one of a kind with that auction for provenance .
Wow Rick, is that a neat story !! To find yours is the exact match of the Photo from 2007 sale. That is Super. Yup, every bump matches up perfectly in Pic 4. Great piece, and great investigating !!
Wow Rick! You can't get more rare than one of a kind! :^D I would call it "My Blue Watermelon Vase", but I guess you better stick with Lava/Crackle vase, that might describe it better! :^D
Another piece for your Museum, GREAT job Rick! :^)
