Carved pieces of Desert Sands were mostly novelty items that were not part of the standard cataloged ware. Though they are scarce, manipulated pieces can be found in many shapes. The small bowls and jugs are somewhat more common than the more imaginative pieces.
These small bowls are 2" and 2 1/2" tall, both with a diameter of around 3". The jug is 3 1/2" tall with a 3" diameter. The square-ish winged ashtray is 3" tall and about 6" on each side. The chimney ashtray is 5" tall with a 6" diameter base.
At the top of the chimney some vertical linear segments have been removed but most of the carving is done in thumb-sized horizontal segments that reveal eye-like patterns in the clay.
Not all Desert Sands Pottery is marked.
It looks like these could been made from scraps of clay, from thrown pots! :^D
Just a way to conserve, and make a little money! :^)
Thanks Bill. Believe me, nothing was wasted at Desert Sands Pottery. These were Depression Era people who brought Depression Era values and even older traditions with them from Missouri. Scraps, stuff left over when everything else was weighed out, throws that went awry were all available for the more fanciful pieces. These expressive and imaginative pieces are almost always created by Arthur Evans.
Thanks for the extra info artfoot, that does explain it, and the way I was raised too! :^)
