We have this Moorcroft Hibiscus-pattern ginger jar and are trying to puzzle out how old it might be ~ or to put it another way, how not-new it is. It has the paper labels on the underside of the jar and the lid, but they unfortunately cover up any marks that might be underneath. The only hint is that the paper label, which identifies the form as #769, also states that they are "POTTERS TO THE LATE QUEEN MARY". From our research, similar offerings with that label are sometimes dated by sellers as the 1970's, but we have found others absent the paper label dated to just the last few years. We wondered if there was any more definitive dating possible. Anyone have a reference work that helps us?

      Hi from Sydney, Australia!
Check out Perfect Pieces who have this info about the addition of the label at various periods.
Moorcroft Royal Warrant printed paper label - By Appoinment Potters To The Late Queen Mary. In use from 1953 to 1978. In 1978 the Royal Warrant expired on the 25th anniversary of the Queen's death. There are two earlier versions of this paper label: Potter To HM The Queen c1928-1953 which was updated in 1936 to read Potter To HM Queen Mary following the death of King George V.

      Thanks, Vetraio50! (May I call you V?)

That info was extremely helpful. Can I assume my instinct was correct not to disturb the paper label to see who (if anyone) signed it? Would any hidden information a) help further pin down a more precise date or 2) matter? Having not handled these before, we really don't know what collectors want or expect. There are two labels ~ one on the lid & one on the pot. Does it matter if one is removed (the pot) when the lid label is left alone?

Very nice jar. The amazing thing about Moorcroft is the intense colours and how they stand the test of time. This jar shows exactly this. :-)
