These 2 brooches I bought with the last 2 bracelets that I posted earlier November. The one on the left with the green opague stones has a nice roundel of small round stones on the right near the bottom which sets a lot of Sherman pieces apart from other manufacturers. The use of green opague stones is rare, however if you see a bracelet or necklace using them, that is considered extremely rare.
The one on the right is full of Siam Red stones and the backing is black Japanned. Japanning is most often a heavy black "lacquer", almost like enamel paint which is done on Jewellery and makes the piece that much rarer, although I would consider these two brooches quite rare !~
Beautiful Phil!
Thank you Caperkid for the comment and love.
Thanks valentino 97 for the love.
Oh I love them Phil ! and 2 rare colors . Another nice addition to our ever growing collection of Sherman . Love Love
Thank you Manikin for the comment and support, love to you also !!
Thank you valentino97, these 2 are signed on the back, however it is fairly easy when you have a collection to find pieces of Sherman that are not signed. Some have postulated that since the stone setters were not paid well as all "set" jewellery, they may have made their own pieces without signatures. However that is only guessed also. If you know your sherman well, it it easy to spot sherman pieces even if they are not signed. Some people are adamant or utterly unyielding in attitude or opinion that all Sherman peices were signed, however there are much more credible people who are sure that NOT ALL sherman is signed. A fact that most can agree on is that there are no known fakes of Sherman because most of it is too laborious or complicated settings that no one would want to spend time making fakes.
The bad book on Sherman is a colour paperback full of common pieces and not one real rare bracelet or necklace is pictured. The book is a price guide and is terrible, by a know it all dealer who is NO EXPERT !!
The book "Sherman Jewellery, The Masterpiece Collection" BY Sandra Caldwell and Evelyn Yallen is just that, A Masterpiece. There is a chapter in the book on unsigned pieces showing signed pieces with pics, and pics of the same pieces unsigned. Very informative !~
Both are gorgeous brooches Phil, in lovely shapes - the green stones look like fine jade
One other thing to note by Sandra Caldwell is, "In Fact, one set purchased from its original owner came with its 1971 Birk's bill and of the three items, only one is signed. The other matching pieces are clearly sherman." I have a set with a bill from 1967 but I think the pieces in that set are all signed. Sherman also used hang tags and boxes all with the name Sherman on them.
Thank you Newfld for the nice comment.
Thanks vetraio50 for the "love", much appreciated.
Very pretty!!
Yes valentino, these images are from a scanner. Unfortunately I darken the background if I want perfect black or lighten it if I want perfect white. That does take time. You can always send me an image if it is not working out right for you, and I can see what I can do for you. The Yallen book is available on Ets.
Mary it is a Epson Perfection V550. I used to have the V500 but dropped it. I got a really good deal in the refurbished section. Hope they have some good deals in U.S. right now. I shop for it in Canada. Lots of retailers sell it also. had it delivered and it came fast. Would not had the deal in retail at the time.
They are so good Phil! That little roundel and the central rows on the red are just exceptional. Art, just art.
Thanks nutsabotas6 for the nice comment !~
