An Early Loetz 'Spatter' Bowl

This is the first genuine 'Early Loetz Spatter' item I met within the last 20 years of interest in Bohemian glass. This bowl is H=5.0 cm D=31.0 cm and has a 18-fold repeated gilded ornament of Rococo scrollworks on the elevations of the wavy rim. It is made of clear glass with melted spots of dark brown, ruby red and white glass. The bottom has a polished pontil and is signed by the typical Loetz mark Dek=II/19. In the published paper patterns dishes are rarely found, based on the décor, I assume a production arround 1890-1900. Similarly decorated vases are known from French producers such as Sevres-Clichy, Legras and sometimes this type of glass is (wrongly ?) assigned to E.Leveille. It might have been this influence, especially the crackle glass of E.Rousseau and E.Leveille containing embeded colourful metal oxides shown at the World Exhibition in 1889, that encouraged Loetz for a similar production. This early 'Spatter' décors were 20 years later produced in nearly every colour combination by Bohemian companies like Kralik, Welz, Ruckl and others and exported in large quantities to the US market.
